The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Atwima Kwanwoma District, Hon. Mrs. Grace Agyemang Asamoah, has inspected ongoing reclamation activities at degraded mining sites at Nweneso No. 2 as part of efforts to assess the progress made in restoring lands affected by mining activities.
The inspection was aimed at assessing the level of work undertaken so far and determining the extent to which the affected lands could be restored for productive use in the future.
During the tour, the DCE expressed optimism about the potential for the reclaimed lands to be put to meaningful and sustainable development purposes once the restoration process was completed.
She urged small-scale miners operating within the area to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their activities by ensuring that mining pits are properly covered and degraded lands restored after mining operations.
Hon. Asamoah stressed that the reclamation of mined-out areas was critical to protecting the environment, safeguarding lives and creating opportunities for the affected lands to support future development.
She further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, while promoting responsible and environmentally sustainable mining practices.
According to her, the fight against illegal mining required the collective efforts of government institutions, security agencies, traditional authorities, miners and residents. She therefore called on all stakeholders to support enforcement efforts and ensure that mining activities complied with the relevant laws and environmental standards.
The DCE also indicated that the Assembly would continue to monitor mining activities within the district and collaborate with the appropriate institutions to ensure that mining was undertaken responsibly.
Residents of Nweneso No. 2 expressed their appreciation to the DCE for what they described as her commitment to enforcing the rules and ensuring that the right thing was done in the management of mining activities within the district.
They commended the Assembly for maintaining a visible presence in communities affected by mining and encouraged the authorities to sustain the monitoring and enforcement exercise.
The DCE was accompanied on the inspection by the District Information Officer, District Environmental Officer, members of the District Taskforce and personnel from the Ghana Police Service.
The inspection forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to protect the environment, restore degraded lands and promote sustainable development within the Atwima Kwanwoma District.
