The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, organized a nationwide Gun Amnesty Programme from 28th January to 30th January across all districts in Ghana. The programme was aimed at encouraging the voluntary surrender and registration of firearms to promote public safety and security. The Atwima Kwanwoma District actively participated in the exercise.
Sensitization and Public Education.

The sensitization campaign within the district was championed by the Information Services Department (ISD). Public education was carried out through announcements at Community Information Centers across the various communities in the district to inform residents about the objectives, duration, and procedures of the Gun Amnesty Programme.
In communities where Community Information Centers were unavailable or not functional, the District Information Officer improvised by using a megaphone to disseminate information at market centers, lorry stations, and other busy public places to ensure wider coverage.
Implementation
The exercise was executed by the District Information Officer, supported by two drivers of the Assembly, who drove official Assembly vehicles on different days to facilitate movement across the district. The team visited several communities to ensure that the message reached as many residents as possible.
Public Response
A large number of people were reached through the sensitization exercise. While some residents received the information through the Community Information Centers, others heard the announcements via the megaphone outreach. The exercise generated significant public interest, with some residents physically approaching the team to seek clarification, while others called via phone to ask questions.
However, some residents expressed frustration over challenges encountered when they reported to the District Police Command to register their firearms. According to these individuals, they were informed by some police officers that they were not aware of the Gun Amnesty Programme, which created confusion and inconvenience for the public.
Public Feedback and Recommendations
Members of the public called for:
● More extensive public education on such important national programme.
● Extension of the Gun Amnesty Programme to allow more people to participate.
● Better coordination and communication between the Ministry of the Interior and the Ghana Police Service, especially at the district level, to ensure uniform understanding and smooth implementation.
Conclusion
Despite the challenges encountered, the Gun Amnesty sensitization exercise in the Atwima Kwanwoma District was largely successful in reaching a broad section of the population. Strengthening collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and improving communication at the local level will enhance the effectiveness of future exercises.
